- The question mark (?) is also known as an interrogation point, interrogation mark, question point, query, or eroteme. In the late 700s as "a lightning flash, striking from right to left", was used to denote intonation - the voice ascending at the end of the sentence. Over the next three centuries this pitch-defining element seems to have been forgotten but in the early thirteenth century, when the book-production trade was expanded the stroke-over-dot became formalised. By this time the stroke was more sharply curved and can easily be recognised as the modern question-mark.
- WHY ARE LEAVES GREEN? The green color in leaves is caused by the presence of a compound called "chlorophyll," which the plant produces to do photosynthesis, which is how plants get energy from sunlight. The purpose of chlorophyll is to assist the plant in making food for itself by utilizing energy from sunlight and nutrients from the soil. The chlorophyll is green because it absorbs red and blue wavelengths of light -- and so green is not absorbed and is reflected, making the plant look green to your eyes. Non-transparent things are the color they are because that is the color that is NOT absorbed -- the color you see is the color that is reflected... which is why you see it!
- WHY ARE THERE LEAP YEARS? Every year is 365 1/4 days. The 1/4 part adds up to a whole day every four years. Because of this, there is an extra day in a leap year. The extra day, called Leap Day, is on Feb 29.
- WHY DO WE NEED FOOD? Food is what the body uses for "fuel". Without food the body could not pump the heart, breathe and all the other essential parts of existing. People who do not eat very much find they are tired from small tasks like walking because the body has no fuel to make your legs move. The body also requires a range of chemicals to keep certain organs alive and to keep the correct balance in the body. These chemical are taken from the food we eat. This is why people have organ failure if they are not eating properly.
- WHY IS THE SKY BLUE? There is a physical phenomenon called Rayleigh scattering that causes light to scatter when it passes through particles that have a diameter one-tenth that of the wavelength (color) of the light. Sunlight is made up of all different colors of light, but because of the elements in the atmosphere the color blue is scattered much more efficiently than the other colors. When you look at the sky on a clear day, you can see the sun as a bright disk. The blueness you see everywhere else is all of the atoms in the atmosphere scattering blue light toward you. Because red light, yellow light, green light and the other colors aren't scattered nearly as well, you see the sky as blue.

at the chain reaction we got to know further about poverty today in countries in Africa and Asia. we did a lot of practical tasks to help us understand further about the extreme poverty the world is facing. W e asked a lot of 'whys' to grasp a better knowledge. It was really knowledgeable and shocking and i am lucky to have attended this event. 12 November 2009, 15:04why ask why?
