How we did the maths
One energy-saving lightbulb lasts as long as 10 normal light bulbs, so each time you do this you save 9 bulbs.
An energy-saving light bulb might not seem cheap but over its lifetime it could save you 37 quid and a lot more besides. Like the planet for example.

about energy saving lightbulbs
- Energy-saving light bulbs will last around 10 times longer than a standard bulb.
- They use up to 80 per cent less electricity than a standard bulb, but produce the same amount of light.
- If you fit all the lights in your house with energy saving bulbs and you could save around £37 a year and £590 over the lifetime of all of the bulbs.
- Traditional light bulbs are very inefficient at converting electricity to light, as they waste 95 per cent of the electricity they use in creating heat.
- This wasted energy adds to your carbon footprint, so reducing the amount of energy used to light your home will not only save you money, but help save the planet.
- To help reduce the UK's carbon emissions, 100 watt light bulbs will be withdrawn from the shops from September 2009. Over the next two years, 75 watt and 60 watt light bulbs will also be taken off the shelves. By 2012, all 40 watt and 25 watt bulbs will disappear from sale.
- Energy saving light bulbs are also known as compact fluorescent lights (CFLs).
- You could also replace traditional light bulbs with halogen bulbs. These are not as efficient as CFLs, but they still use between 25 and 40 per cent less energy than traditional light bulbs.
- Energy saving bulbs contain a small amount of mercury - just enough to cover the tip of a ballpoint pen. The mercury can't escape from a light bulb when it is being used, but you must be careful of how you recycle them. You should not throw CFL bulbs into the normal rubbish, or into the household recycling bins provided by your local council, as the mercury could escape if the bulb gets broken. In most parts of the UK, CFL bulbs can be recycled at your local waste and recycling centre. You can find your nearest recycling centre by contacting your local council.

4 years ago my wife and I switched to CFL's and have not looked back. I would like to point out however, that they only last about three years. Three years is still long enough for us to have seen a huge return on our investment. Switching all the lights seems to have saved us around $10 a month. That's $360 over the life of the bulbs. the switch only cost $30 because we were able to take advantage of government rebates. Doing this put $330 back in our pockets and made our carbon footprint a little smaller. I would advise anyone, no matter how small or large your home to switch as many bulbs as you can.
