How we did the maths
The average office worker uses 10,000 sheets of copy paper each year, that's 833 sheets a month. We estimated that people who did this action recycled quarter the paper they use in a month, roughly 250 pages. 1 ream (500 sheets) uses 6% of a tree, so 250 sheets uses 3% of a tree.
There is no 'away'.
A profound thought. Someone like Chris Martin should turn it into an album title.

about recycling waste paper
- A single tree will absorb approx 730kg of CO2 over its lifetime
- One person causes about 10 tonnes of carbon dioxide to be emitted a year. One tree removes about 3/4 of a tonne of CO2 over its lifetime.
- By cooling the air and ground around them, the shade from trees helps cool the earth's temperature.
- A single mature beech tree can produce enough oxygen for 10 people in a year.
- Trees renew our air supply by absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen.
- Shade trees can make buildings up to 20 degrees cooler in the summer.
- Trees lower air temperature by evaporating water in their leaves.
- Tree roots stabilize soil and prevent erosion.
- Trees improve water quality by slowing and filtering rain water, as well as protecting aquifers and watersheds.
- Over one given year; one hectare of mature woodland will absorb the carbon emissions of 100 average family cars.
- It is estimated that the average person in the UK consumes the equivalent of 12 trees a year. This present rate of world consumption is unsustainable and yet trees are vital to our life on earth.
- How many trees:
- 1 ton of 100% virgin (non-recycled) newsprint uses 12 trees
A "pallet" of copier paper (20-lb. sheet weight, or 20#) contains 40 cartons and weighs 1 ton. Therefore, 1 carton (10 reams) of 100% virgin copier paper uses 0.6 trees
1 tree makes 16.67 reams of copy paper or 8,333.3 sheets
1 ream (500 sheets) uses 6% of a tree
1 ton of coated, higher-end virgin magazine paper (used for magazines like National Geographic and many others) uses a little more than 15 trees (15.36 trees)
1 ton of coated, lower-end virgin magazine paper (used for newsmagazines and most catalogs) uses nearly 8 trees (7.68 trees) - To calculate how many trees are saved by using recycled paper Multiply the number of trees needed to make a ton of the kind of paper you're talking about (groundwood or freesheet) by the percent recycled content in the paper. For example, 1 ton (40 cartons) of 30% postconsumer content copier paper saves 7.2 trees. 1 ton of 50% postconsumer content copier paper saves 12 trees.
- Other tips for environmentally friendly office use:
- Refill and reuse empty printer cartridges
- Use rewriteable CDs and DVDs so they can be re-used again
- Print double-sided.
- Decrease margin areas to fit more copy on a page
- Double-check your drafts before you print
- Communicate with team members about who will bring printouts to meetings
- Turn off all electrical equipment at night.

At home, I've always recycled paper. We have a special corner for paper that has only be used on one side, so we can use it again. Empty cereal boxes make great material for my crafts with my students.Empty egg-boxes serve great as eggcups before throwing them away.
At our school we also re-use paper that has only be used on one side. I try to convince my students to use their notebooks in an economical and ecological way, not ripping out pages because they have made mistakes for example. Getting Recycled paper in the shops though is not that easy here in a small city in the South of Spain. In my homecountry, Belgium, it's a piece of cake to buy recycled pads or paper.
Let's be honest: it's not that hard and it makes a great difference!

Homework..
After we turn our math homework in and our teacher gave us credit for it, we usually get it back. Some sutdents save it, to have examples. I think we have enough examples in our book and the notes we took, so I always throw my old math homework in the recycle !! 30 April 2010, 18:26Ask Jim!

Both year 5 classes got busy recycling paper!!we tore the paper into small pieces and mixed in with water to make a pulp. This was messy but great fun! Then we put the pulp onto some mesh racks and pushed out the water. Once we got rid of as much water as possible we turned the racks upside down and rolled the pulp between two sheets of paper with a rolling pin. Then we left it to dry!!! I do this at home and have also started recycling at school. The facilities do not seem that good, so I have a box under my desk in the office and all staff in there put their waste paper in the box. I have always recyled whether it's my old revision notes or just a newspaper. Even the odd bit of the litter which can be recyled goes into the correct recyling bins as well.:)
as a family we constantly recycle anything and everything that we can! my mum just put out 3 boxes of recycling out just 10 mins ago for the borough people to collect tomorrow morning! it contains paper, cardboards, tins, glass e.t.c! 03 September 2009, 21:20
