Become We Are What We Do campaigners

table_copy_300Our Secondary Schools Programme includes a one-day workshop to train a group of students to be We Are What We Do campaigners.

It includes a range of materials and ongoing support to allow them to then involve all year groups in a campaign based around one of the secondary curriculum cross-curriculum dimensions.

The programme aims:

  • To use We Are What We Do's simple everyday actions to engage students in developing their understanding of the cross-curriculum dimensions
  • To combine cross-curricular processes to create engaging and well-founded campaigning materials
  • To encourage creativity, use of ICT, and the application of PLTSs
  • To emphasise the benefits of education for sustainable development and community wellbeing to the school environment

Outline of the package

Training session:

  • 1 day training session for a group of students to become We Are What We Do campaigners within their schools, and one teacher to become a We Are What We Do co-ordinator.
  • Creation of campaigning materials around a set of actions according to a choice of cross-curriculum dimensions, making use of the free online resources and a set of extra resources for We Are What We Do schools.powerpoint_copy_300
  • These training sessions will follow the same overall structure, but be designed to draw out different skills and develop specific understanding based on the particular dimension chosen, from: 
    • Identity and cultural diversity
    • Healthy lifestyles
    • Community participation
    • Enterprise
    • Global dimension and sustainable development
    • Technology and the media
    • Creativity and critical thinking
  • A WAWWD experience, modelling actions and behaviours and creating a learning environment that promotes actions such as #124 Don't worry if you make a mistake, #107 Look closer, #13 Ask Why? and #101 make someone smile.

Ongoing support:

  • Email and phone number of We Are What We Do school support, offering ongoing guidance on using the website resources and running school campaigns
  • One further visit to the school to support a particular campaign or event
  • Case studies of other We Are What We Do schools providing examples of campaigns and how they have been run

Use of website resources:

  • Action tracker: To set up a class or school group, select actions to track and track them.
  • Campaign planner: To set up, as a class or school, a campaign targetting selected actions.
  • Tools: 'How to...' clips, stats and facts and creative assets to use to create campaigning materials.

Further resources as part of the package:

  • We Are What We Do actions pack - with resources to support each of the campaign themes, including posters, stickers, ideas on activities etc.
  • Books: A set of 'Change the World for a fiver' books
  • We Are What We Do certificates: For year 9 or 10 campaigners outlining their achievments. For the coordinating teacher as evidence for professional development portfolios.
  • Goodies for the teacher: A 'Plastic Ain't my Bag' bag, 'Change the World for a Fiver' book and We Are What We Do stationery for the co-ordinating teacher
  • We are a We Are What We Do school logo: A logo to display on the school website, and a feed of the school web page of the We Are What We Do website.
  • Discounts: We Are What We Do schools will be entitled to discounts on further supplies of books, stationery, mugs etc.

Costs

The cost to run the whole programme as a package is £1,000.  We are also able to run shorter introductory workshops for either teachers or students.  A two hour workshop costs £250 plus travel expenses.
